Lake Cliff Garden Tour

The Saugatuck Douglas Garden Club visited the Lake Cliff Gardens on September 15th, 2014.  Lake Cliff Gardens is a 5-acre botanical wonder located on a dramatic cliff overlooking Lake Michigan, with a focus on tropical plants from all over the world. These tender, mature plants, which are dug each fall and moved to a greenhouse, are supported by over 2500 additional plants that Barbara and Ron Weirich start from seed each year, along with outstanding exotic specimens of trees, shrubs, and perennials that are hardy in a Zone 6 garden. With this almost unlimited plant palette, the garden is designed around a series of garden rooms dedicated to various specialties, with sculptures created by Barbara and Ron integrated into the landscape. Featured three times in Fine Gardening Magazine, Lake Cliff Gardens is an amazing showcase of garden and landscape art at its best.  These pictures don’t come close to showing the true art in these gardens.

A note from our President, Jane Dreyer

Hello and Welcome!

The Saugatuck Douglas Garden Club welcomes you to our new website and we wish to tell you what we are all about.  The Garden Club was founded in 1928 and Federated in 1947.  We are a member of the National Garden Clubs, Inc., Central Region, and District IV No. 232 of the Michigan Garden Clubs, Inc.

We have 82 members both men and women who are committed to beautifying our two cities of Douglas and Saugatuck.  We are very proud of the two scholarships we award each year to a student from Saugatuck or Fennville who will be majoring in a science-related field with a preference given to conservation, horticulture and community service.  In the Spring we invite the 6th graders from Saugatuck Middle School to help us plant 47 pots of annuals along the streets of Saugatuck.  The students are educated about how to plant while having lots of fun.  We also help Christian Neighbors by decorating the hall for the Children’s Christmas party and shopping for families in need of a little help and cheering up at Christmas time.

We meet at various venues the third Monday of every month except January, February and March.  We would love to have you join us and see what we are about by attending any of our monthly meetings.

Plant a smile, grow a friendship.

Jane Dreyer
